The Deutsch-Asiatische Bank in China

About this PhD Project

This website deals with my PhD Project in Modern Sino-German history at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. In my PhD project I deal with the history of the Deutsch-Asiatische Bank (German Asiatic Bank, 德华银行) in China from the establishment of the bank in Shanghai in 1889 to the liquidation of its China branches during the First World War. In my research I am especially interested in the development of networks of transnational elites during the late Qing and early republican period and the role these networks played within Sino-German and Sino-Foreign relations.By using this research approach I analyse the cooperation and growing interdependence between German and Chinese elites and the growing internationalisation of China from the late nineteenth century onwards.

For this reason I hope to find documents, photos and descendants of former employees of the bank. Please contact me if you are a descendant of one of the employees of the bank or possess any documents or photos relevant to the bank’s history. Thank you very much!
